Inside out is Pixar's 15th feature-length animation with a unique material for personification of emotions. Perhaps it might seem childish to personify the abstract element of emotion. But Inside out overcomes this limitation with creative imagination and clever character design.
The personification of the emotion was designed simply for the audience to be able to recognize intuitively the feelings of each character. The world of emotion was depicted much more space than expected to show how complicated the human’s feeling.
Joy, sadness, anger, fear and disgust appear in this movie. After all, four emotional characters out of five except joy are negative emotions. But the feelings of human cannot be filled with joy. Inside out emphasizes that sadness should be accepted inevitably as a necessary emotion in our lives.
Sad movies were often dark. But this film is bright while sad. 'Inside out says that sadness is not just misfortune. (As seems like revealing visually that message, this film is more bright colors than previous Pixar films ever.) As always great Pixar animation, what eventually left after the movie over is also clear and deeply moving aftertaste.
It is known whether Pixar can completely escape from the recession of the past few years through this film. But even if Pixar’s golden age never comes again, I will satisfy if I can often see such a good movie.
